Summer in January? {Running Update}

It’s been unseasonably warm in SC this past week. Seriously, I have a tan line from my tank top I wore on last Saturday’s morning run. That morning started out with a cloud overcast but by the time I finished my run, the sun was brightly shining and the temperature started heating up.

Monday was in the 70s and by the time Pub Run came around, it was still 74 degrees…at 6:30pm on January 14th. Wow… Halfway through our run I wanted to kick myself for not passing up my short sleeves for a tank on that warm night. We were really sticky feeling by the time we finished. Ick.

Dawn and I decided to do an extra loop around the lake to add on extra mileage. She’s training for a half marathon in February and though mine isn’t until November, I still want to gradually increase my weekly mileage. So our partnership works great. Not to mention that she’s reliable and we’ve never missed a planned run together. Remember what I said in Monday’s post about joining a running group? If you plan a run with someone else, you’re 99% more likely to hold to that scheduled run, knowing that someone else is relying on you.

The extra loop put us at 4 miles. Perfect. I actually wore the UA RPM Spine shoes on Monday night and I’m not sure that those shoes are cut out for my feet. Or rather, I’m not sure that my feet like them much for longer runs. I’ll be monitoring them but I’ll most likely use them for shorter runs. The Mizunos are surprisingly holding up well. I was a little concerned with moving from a stability shoe to a neutral shoe but I love them!

Three of us girls wore pink shoes at Pub Run so Dawn pointed out that we had to take a picture!

I’m thinking those shoes need some pink shoelaces, don’t you?

After the run I stuck around for a nice glass of wine and then we later headed over to Wild Wings for a late dinner. Last week I tried the Chicken & Friends wrap at the suggestion of my running buddies. Truthfully, it was a little dry and I honestly wasn’t impressed. It apparently was disappointing enough that Curtis felt the need to apologize and swore up and down that it is much better. So I decided to give it another go.

It redeemed itself. Yummy!

Last week Dawn and I ran 5 miles on Thursday. Unfortunately she was going to be out of town today so she planned on running yesterday morning at the Dam. I asked if I could tag along because I wanted to get another 5 miles in this week before the weekend and didn’t want to run by myself after dark on Thursday.

With the pups gone by Tuesday night, thankfully I had less to do when I got up Wednesday morning. I couldn’t resist sharing another picture of those cute fluff balls!

It’s crazy how much 2.5 weeks can make a difference!
Look at how they’ve matured!

Oh 5:15 am comes early just so you know! But it was nice to get in a nice easy run before the sun came up! It’s been awhile since I’ve had a good morning run outside before work. I used to get my morning runs done first thing in the summer time, but since the time change and with the shorter days it was getting harder and harder for me to get up early.

Or maybe it has something to do with how crazy busy my life is?!?

Nine miles under the belt this week so far and I’m hoping to increase Saturday’s mileage to 8.5 miles. I’m pleased with the increase in mileage the past week or two. I’m hoping to sit down with my fitbook this weekend and plan out an extra day of running going forward. I need to start incorporating hill routines and tempo runs. I’m also looking for some good books about running that will help increase my knowledge.

Do you have a favorite running book I should read?
How often do you do hills and tempo runs?
